What Can Family Therapy Do For You?

Seeing a counselor does not have to be done on your own. Sometimes, family therapy can be beneficial for ensuring the family unit lives and works together more cohesively. So, what exactly is family therapy and how can it help? Let's dive in.

What is Family Therapy?

Family therapy is a type of psychotherapy that aims to help family members communicate better and resolve conflicts so they can live together more happily and stress-free. Sessions are conducted by a counselor and may include the entire family or just those that are willing and able to participate.

Why is it Helpful?

Many families turn to therapy for help with mending troubled relationships between family members. Issues that can be addressed in family therapy include marital problems, financial problems, conflicts between the parents and children, or the effects of one person's substance abuse or mental health problems on the other family members.

What to Expect

Sessions can happen with each family member individually, or together as a group. A typical session will last for 50 minutes, once per week, over a period of 12 weeks. Of course, each family is different and you may need more or less time. During the session, you may discuss your family's ability to solve problems and express thoughts and emotions productively; explore family roles, rules, and behavior patterns; and identify strengths and weaknesses.
